(English column) The Colorful Fall Leaves (紅葉)
Hi there! I’m Paol, and I am from the Philippines. The only season in the Philippines is summer, but ever since coming to Japan, my favorite season has become fall. One of the things I look forward to in fall is the leaves changing colors.
During fall, one of the most common questions is, “How do you say 紅葉 in English?” Although one word is used in Japanese to describe this phenomenon, in English, we have to use a phrase, and there are countless ways of expressing it.
Here are some examples:
- I enjoy watching the leaves change color in fall.
- Look at those trees! They are starting to change colors.
- I went to Kyoto to see the colorful fall leaves.
- I’m going to go to Kourankei (香嵐渓) to look at the colorful leaves this weekend.
How about you? Do you like looking at the leaves during fall?
Which is your favorite season?
